Advicon Imaging offers high-quality ultrasound imaging across our Sydney clinics. Our ultrasound examinations are performed by experienced sonographers using high-resolution equipment. We're committed to providing accurate, reliable imaging in a comfortable and accessible setting, with Medicare-eligible studies bulk billed.

Ultrasound (sonography) is one of the most widely used medical imaging tools due to its excellent safety profile, real-time capability, and broad diagnostic range. Using high-frequency sound waves, ultrasound produces detailed images of soft tissues and internal structures—without radiation exposure. This makes it ideal for patients of all ages, including pregnant women and children.

Ultrasound can be used to investigate a wide range of symptoms and conditions by providing real-time images of organs, soft tissues, blood flow and other structures within the body.
Abdominal pain or digestive symptoms
Gallbladder, kidney, liver, or spleen assessment
Thyroid and neck lumps
Blood flow studies (vascular ultrasound)
Pregnancy and fertility assessment
Pelvic and women’s imaging
Paediatric conditions
Testicular and scrotal issues
Soft tissue lumps
Because ultrasound shows movement in real time, it can assess blood flow using Doppler imaging and guide certain injections or procedures (see image-guided procedures) when needed.
At Advicon Imaging, all ultrasound examinations are performed by experienced sonographers using high-resolution equipment for accurate and reliable results. Our radiologists provide detailed reports, and eligible studies are bulk-billed under Medicare.

What Is an Ultrasound Scan and How Does It Work?
An ultrasound scan is a safe, painless and radiation-free imaging technique that uses sound waves to create real-time images from inside the body. Ultrasound can show organs, tissues, blood vessels and developing pregnancies, allowing the area being examined to be viewed as it moves in real time.
Ultrasound can also be used to assess blood flow with Doppler imaging and to guide certain injections or procedures when required.
Ultrasound can be used to investigate a wide range of symptoms, conditions and areas of the body. Your doctor may refer you for an ultrasound to investigate pain, swelling, lumps, organ function, blood flow, pregnancy-related concerns or other general medical issues.
Common reasons for an ultrasound include:
Abdominal pain or digestive symptoms
Assessment of the gallbladder, kidneys, liver or spleen
Thyroid and neck lumps
Blood flow studies using vascular ultrasound
Pregnancy and fertility assessment
Pelvic and women’s imaging
Musculoskeletal injuries
Paediatric conditions
Testicular and scrotal issues
Soft tissue lumps
The type of ultrasound performed will depend on the area or concern being investigated.
Your doctor may refer you for an ultrasound to investigate symptoms or assess a particular area of the body. Ultrasound can be used to investigate pain, swelling and lumps, as well as assess organ function, blood flow, pregnancy-related concerns and other general health issues.
Ultrasound is one of the safest imaging techniques available and is suitable for patients of all ages. It uses harmless sound waves to produce images and does not involve radiation.
This allows ultrasound to provide real-time imaging of organs, tissues, vessels and developing pregnancies without the use of radiation.
Preparation depends on the type of ultrasound you are having. Some scans require fasting or a full bladder, while others require no specific preparation.
Common preparation requirements include:
Abdominal ultrasound: Fast for 6 hours before the scan.
Pelvic ultrasound: Drink 1 litre of water approximately 1 hour before your appointment and arrive with a full bladder.
Renal / kidney ultrasound: Drink water to fill your bladder and avoid urinating for 1 hour before the scan.
Pregnancy ultrasound: A full bladder is required for early pregnancy dating or viability scans, while later pregnancy scans may not require bladder preparation.
Other ultrasound studies: Many require no specific preparation.
Preparation varies by examination, so please follow the instructions provided when you book your appointment. More detailed preparation information for individual ultrasound types is available in the section above.
No. Ultrasound is a painless imaging technique. During the examination, mild pressure may be applied to the area being scanned.
Most ultrasound scans take approximately 15–30 minutes to complete. Your examination is performed by an experienced sonographer using high-resolution ultrasound equipment.
