What Is an Ultrasound Scan?

Ultrasound (sonography) is one of the most widely used medical imaging tools due to its excellent safety profile, real-time capability, and broad diagnostic range. Using high-frequency sound waves, ultrasound produces detailed images of soft tissues and internal structures—without radiation exposure. This makes it ideal for patients of all ages, including pregnant women and children.

Conditions and Symptoms Assessed with Ultrasound:

Ultrasound can be used to investigate a wide range of symptoms and conditions by providing real-time images of organs, soft tissues, blood flow and other structures within the body.

  • Abdominal pain or digestive symptoms

  • Gallbladder, kidney, liver, or spleen assessment

  • Thyroid and neck lumps

  • Blood flow studies (vascular ultrasound)

  • Pregnancy and fertility assessment

  • Pelvic and women’s imaging

  • Musculoskeletal injuries

  • Paediatric conditions

  • Testicular and scrotal issues

  • Soft tissue lumps

Because ultrasound shows movement in real time, it can assess blood flow using Doppler imaging and guide certain injections or procedures (see image-guided procedures) when needed.

At Advicon Imaging, all ultrasound examinations are performed by experienced sonographers using high-resolution equipment for accurate and reliable results. Our radiologists provide detailed reports, and eligible studies are bulk-billed under Medicare.

Ultrasound Preparation: What to Do Before Your Scan

Clear and correct preparation helps ensure that your ultrasound scan is accurate and provides the best possible diagnostic information. Different ultrasound studies require different preparation instructions. Please review the guidelines below or follow the instructions provided at the time of your booking.

All Medicare‑eligible ultrasound studies are fully bulk‑billed at Advicon Imaging.

General Ultrasound Preparation

Before your ultrasound appointment, please follow these general preparation guidelines:

  • Take your regular medications unless you have been instructed otherwise.
  • Let our team know if you are pregnant.
  • If you have diabetes, please discuss any fasting requirements with our team before your appointment.
  • Arrive approximately 5 minutes early to allow time for check-in.

Preparation requirements can vary depending on the type of ultrasound you are having. If you are unsure about your preparation or have questions about the instructions provided, our reception team will be happy to clarify them before your scan.

Advicon Imaging provides fully bulk-billed ultrasound examinations for Medicare-eligible studies.

Abdomen Ultrasound

Preparation:

  • Fast for 6 hours before your scan.
  • Do not consume food, milk or chewing gum during this fasting period.
  • You may sip small amounts of water if needed.

Why this is required:

Fasting reduces bowel gas and improves visualisation of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas and other abdominal organs during your ultrasound.

Pelvic Ultrasound (Female and Male)

Preparation:

  • Arrive for your ultrasound with a full bladder.
  • Drink approximately 1 litre of water 1 hour before your appointment.
  • Do not empty your bladder until after your scan.

Why this is required:

A full bladder helps push the bowel aside, allowing clearer imaging of the pelvic area.

Renal / Kidney Ultrasound

Preparation:

  • Drink water before your appointment so your bladder is full.
  • Avoid urinating for 1 hour before your scan.
  • No fasting is required unless your renal ultrasound is being combined with an abdominal study.

Why this is required:

A full bladder allows assessment of bladder function and urinary outflow during the examination.

Pregnancy Ultrasound

Preparation requirements vary depending on the stage and type of pregnancy ultrasound being performed.

Early Pregnancy (Dating / Viability):

  • A full bladder is required.
  • Drink 1 litre of water approximately 1 hour before your appointment.

Second & Third Trimester:

  • No bladder preparation is required.
  • Wear loose clothing to allow easy access to your abdomen.

Morphology Scan (18–20 weeks):

  • No special preparation is required.

Transvaginal Pelvic Ultrasound

Preparation:

  • Empty your bladder before your scan.

What to know:

A transvaginal pelvic ultrasound may be offered when higher-detail imaging of the uterus and ovaries is required. This examination is optional and is always performed with patient consent.

Thyroid / Neck Ultrasound

Preparation:

  • No preparation is required.
  • Wear a top that allows easy access to the neck area during your ultrasound.

Breast Ultrasound

Preparation:

  • No preparation is required.
  • Avoid applying creams or powders to your chest on the day of your scan.

Testicular / Scrotal Ultrasound

Preparation:

  • No preparation is required.
  • Wear comfortable clothing to your appointment.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound

Preparation:

  • No specific preparation is required.
  • Wear clothing that allows easy access to the area being scanned.

Paediatric Ultrasound

Preparation varies depending on the type of paediatric ultrasound being performed.

  • Abdominal ultrasound: Infants may need a shorter fasting period. Our team will advise you of the appropriate preparation.
  • Renal / pelvic ultrasound: Older children may need to arrive with a full bladder.
  • Hip, soft tissue or neck ultrasound: No preparation is required.

Parents and carers may stay with their child throughout the examination.

Vascular Ultrasound (Doppler Studies)

Preparation varies depending on the type of vascular ultrasound being performed.

Carotid Doppler:

  • No preparation is required.

Leg Arteries or Veins:

  • No preparation is required.
  • Wear loose trousers or shorts if possible.

Aortic Aneurysm Screening:

  • Fast for 6 hours before your appointment.

Why this is required:

Fasting reduces bowel gas and improves the view of the abdominal aorta during the ultrasound.

Ultrasound FAQs

What Is an Ultrasound Scan and How Does It Work?

What Is an Ultrasound Scan and How Does It Work?

An ultrasound scan is a safe, painless and radiation-free imaging technique that uses sound waves to create real-time images from inside the body. Ultrasound can show organs, tissues, blood vessels and developing pregnancies, allowing the area being examined to be viewed as it moves in real time.

Ultrasound can also be used to assess blood flow with Doppler imaging and to guide certain injections or procedures when required.

Ultrasound can be used to investigate a wide range of symptoms, conditions and areas of the body. Your doctor may refer you for an ultrasound to investigate pain, swelling, lumps, organ function, blood flow, pregnancy-related concerns or other general medical issues.

Common reasons for an ultrasound include:

  • Abdominal pain or digestive symptoms

  • Assessment of the gallbladder, kidneys, liver or spleen

  • Thyroid and neck lumps

  • Blood flow studies using vascular ultrasound

  • Pregnancy and fertility assessment

  • Pelvic and women’s imaging

  • Musculoskeletal injuries

  • Paediatric conditions

  • Testicular and scrotal issues

  • Soft tissue lumps

The type of ultrasound performed will depend on the area or concern being investigated.

Why Might My Doctor Refer Me for an Ultrasound?

Your doctor may refer you for an ultrasound to investigate symptoms or assess a particular area of the body. Ultrasound can be used to investigate pain, swelling and lumps, as well as assess organ function, blood flow, pregnancy-related concerns and other general health issues.

Are Ultrasound Scans Safe and Do They Use Radiation?

Ultrasound is one of the safest imaging techniques available and is suitable for patients of all ages. It uses harmless sound waves to produce images and does not involve radiation.
This allows ultrasound to provide real-time imaging of organs, tissues, vessels and developing pregnancies without the use of radiation.

How Should I Prepare for an Ultrasound Scan?

Preparation depends on the type of ultrasound you are having. Some scans require fasting or a full bladder, while others require no specific preparation.

Common preparation requirements include:

  • Abdominal ultrasound: Fast for 6 hours before the scan.

  • Pelvic ultrasound: Drink 1 litre of water approximately 1 hour before your appointment and arrive with a full bladder.

  • Renal / kidney ultrasound: Drink water to fill your bladder and avoid urinating for 1 hour before the scan.

  • Pregnancy ultrasound: A full bladder is required for early pregnancy dating or viability scans, while later pregnancy scans may not require bladder preparation.

  • Other ultrasound studies: Many require no specific preparation.

Preparation varies by examination, so please follow the instructions provided when you book your appointment. More detailed preparation information for individual ultrasound types is available in the section above.

Is an Ultrasound Scan Painful?

No. Ultrasound is a painless imaging technique. During the examination, mild pressure may be applied to the area being scanned.

How Long Does an Ultrasound Scan Take?

Most ultrasound scans take approximately 15–30 minutes to complete. Your examination is performed by an experienced sonographer using high-resolution ultrasound equipment.
